What is miniature wargaming?

Miniature wargaming is a multi-faceted type of game that involves small-scale miniatures (anywhere from a half-dozen to hundreds!) of soldiers and vehicles as the playing pieces which are played on a tabletop (or other open space) populated by modeled terrain. Much of the appeal to miniatures games is the three-dimensional aspect of the game; what a particular piece can see is readily determined by taking a “model’s-eye-view”, and a tape-measure is typically used for movement (rather than using pre-defined movement spaces).

Besides playing the game itself, there is also a hobby aspect to miniature wargaming. While some games provide figures pre-painted, a great many allow the players to assemble and paint their own miniatures, adding another dimension to the hobby that many find as gratifying as the battles.

Why play miniature wargames?

  • Educational: At its core, miniature wargaming is a numbers game. The players need to build their force in advance, using the limited resources available to them to build the best team they can. Since most games use dice, or some other randomizing method, to determine the effectiveness of a model/unit’s actions (whether attacking an enemy, or determining if their morale will hold or they’ll run away in the face of danger), players learn to calculate probabilities and build strategies to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses in their force. While math skills aren’t necessary to begin, players inevitably learn a number of math and problem-solving skills as they play. Many of these games are based on popular mythology or historical battles. While most people are attracted to the game for entertainment, they quickly find themselves accidentally learning something along the way as they read the background and setting for the game.
  • Hobby: Many players are drawn into miniature wargaming at least in part because of the hobby aspect. Most miniature wargame pieces come unassembled and unpainted, allowing the player the opportunity to assemble and paint their pieces however they choose, creating a custom look to their force. One of the great things about miniature wargaming is that every person’s force is unique, and watching two beautifully painted armies face off against each other. Don’t be intimidated, though. Like all skills, modeling and painting takes some practice. And if the hobby part of the game doesn’t interest you, there are many players who play with completely unpainted armies. On the other hand, there are plenty of people who don’t even play the game, but love collecting and painting miniatures!
  • Financial: Many people are hesitant to get into miniature wargaming because they believe it’s too expensive. While it is possible to spend a lot of money (especially if you feel the need to collect a lot of armies!), there are many miniature wargames that you can start playing for the price of a simple board game. The amount you spend on the game is only what you want to spend. Some games use only a half-dozen models, while others can number in the hundreds. Unlike most other games, you’re not just paying for the game itself, but for a hobby. Fortunately, miniatures last pretty much forever. Even when you’re not playing the game, they look really cool on the shelf!
